A mattepainting is a workover of one or (mostly) several pictures. You use photos to express something very different than what they were showing before. Or you change e.g. the weather in a scene by changing general colouring and lightning and adding effects. But its not just photomanipulation ! You always add parts that are painted by you :) Some people are so perfect, you cant see what is drawn and what is orignial...
